i had to
Inspired by every student whose told they can’t be an artist because it doesn’t “make enough money”.
Everyone keeps telling me I shouldn’t be a writer cause I won’t get enough money to survive and sometimes I feel like saying something but yeah… Money’s kind of necessary. Artists and writers and all do need some cash from other sources, hate to say it :/
wow this is all complete bullshit. good luck paying the bills with a skill that people don’t feel is actually worth paying for. yeah wouldn’t it be fucking great to be able to do what we love for a living? too bad we don’t live in a fucking utopia where all our financial needs are magically taken care of.
And heaven forbid we should have to make enough money to support other people, too.
For real. Also let’s not forget surprises such as ‘your car has exploded’ or ‘you have Lyme’s disease’. I’d rather do what I love in the evenings when I’m out of work, content in the knowledge that the day job I have is making sure I’m protected in case of misfortune. ‘Cause it may not cost a bunch to just live, but it sure as shit costs a bunch to not be absolutely screwed the first time something bad happens.
This isn’t to say you shouldn’t do what you love, but like, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being financially secure while you hone that writing talent/perfect your painting skills/figure out just how you’re going to vomit baby ducks in your awesome magic show.
Truth. That hobby you love? It’s a lot less great when your entire livelihood depends on it. I like writing for fun, and if the inspiration doesn’t hit for a while, I don’t have to worry about not buying groceries. OP is super, super, super naive, to put it kindly.
Heaven forbid you’re in a low-income situation where you want to help out your family. Some of us don’t give up on a dream because we have a problem with a simpler life, but because we feel responsible for the welfare of the family unit that raised us. It’s about seeing a need that you can alleviate.
It’s not glamorous, it’s not what you wanted to do when you grew up, and a lot of the time, the jobs are full of horrible people and experiences. However, you get through the day knowing that your struggle means one less bill to worry about.
And yeah, some days are glum and you wish you could throw it all away and do what you love, but the REALITY is that a lot of us have to pay the bills so we can keep doing that awesome hobby we have.
To say that people don’t survive off their interests because they don’t want to is not only cruel, it shows an amount of ignorance bordering on the “No bread? Why don’t they just eat cake?” mentality.
"It just shows you how important it is to represent everyone in our profession." (x)
